Earth vs the Invaders faction focus - THE CULTURE!

4/14/2026

Today we conclude a series that covers all the Invader factions in the upcoming wargame Earth vs the Invaders. Set in the 1950's, Earth is an asymmetrical wargame where one player takes control of the civilian defenders and National Guard of Anytown, America while their opponent controls the hideous beings bent on destroying all we hold dear!

While the Human Forces stay consistent, the choice of Invader faction will significantly alter the game. Each force has been designed to provide a different, interesting tactical challenge that will keep both players on their toes.

The Culture: Overview

The Culture is the strangest threat that Human Forces have yet to face! Inspired by classic 50's movies like The Blob and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the Culture is a shapeless substance controlled by a powerful and relentless being which has come to the Earth with only one goal: consume!

The Culture allows an all new way to utilize the Reinforcements system that is a core part of Earth vs the Invaders. Instead of bringing new units onto the board, the Culture can heal units or even upgrade the ever present Controller, a sinister being that, left undestroyed, can become unstoppable!
Picture

The Culture: Units

The Culture commands a strange roster of gelatinous horrors which are mostly melee-oriented. Each unit has a particular special ability that makes it a threat to humanity.

The Controller is a unique unit that The Culture always starts the game with. This floating being is at the center of the Culture's invasion and other units may spawn from it. Over the course of the game, Reinforcement points can be spent to upgrade the Controller into something completely unstoppable.

Large Blobs are deadly vs human infantry and when destroyed they split into two Small Blobs.

The Mind Melter has no offensive ability of its own but can control one enemy unit per turn, subverting the will of the weak minded.

Human forces will not anticipate the attack of the Replacements until it is too late! These pop people appear human until they draw close to the enemy and assimilate them.

The Giant Amoeba is the Culture's most resilient organelle and can absorb any firepower thrown at it.

If you're ready to grow your own Culture, I have suggestions for models in my article on building an army for Earth vs the Invaders.

Earth vs the Invaders faction focus - FLYING SAUCERS!

Today we continue a series that will cover all the Invader factions in the upcoming wargame Earth vs the Invaders.

The Flying Saucers: Overview

The Flying Saucers present an exciting opportunity to command a powerful, specialized force mixing nimble flying craft with technologically superior ground forces, as well as the ability to field some mega-powerful war machines!

Flying Saucers reward an aloof, cautious play style at the start of games, as they are limited to light Scout Saucers. Once they have access to infantry and powerful war machines, though, their offensive ability is unmatched.

Flying Saucer infantry units can only be deployed via their teleporters that are installed in each Scout Saucer. However their ability to build Ship Beacons mean that their flying units can arrive in unexpected places.
Picture

The Flying Saucers: Units

The Flying Saucers have a strong variety of infantry and machinery to choose from, with heavy offensive focus.

The Scout Saucer is the unit that this faction will rely on at the start of games. Its fragility makes it a precious asset, but it is at the heart of the invader's strategy as it deploys extraterrestrial infantry from its teleportation chambers.

Saucer Commanders and Infantry represent the Scientist and Warrior castes of the invaders respectively, and sortie out of their flying saucers to ascertain the strength of the defending humans, as well as their potential culinary uses...

The Mechanoids are semi-robotic close combat specialists, ripping apart human men and machines with their various lethal limbs and cutting tools.

The War Saucer and Tripods represent the most deadly machines in the Saucer arsenal, reserved for the destruction of the most stubborn pockets of human resistance. War Saucers have replaced their teleportation capability to pack more armor and tank-destroying armaments. The Tripod is a lumbering, gigantic doomsday weapon on legs, capable of unleashing limitless destructive energy.

Faction Focus: The Giant Insects!

Today we're starting a series that will cover all the Invader factions in the upcoming wargame Earth vs the Invaders.

The Giant Insects: Overview

The Giant Insects faction was the first that I designed and playtested for Earth vs the Invaders, being inspired by the greatest of all 50's scifi monster monster movies, Them!.

The Giant Insects force is a predominately melee-oriented and very tough roster of monstrous units. They specialize in massive, primitive destruction. This faction will likely field the lowest number of units in the game but each multi-legged behemoth will be a serious threat that the human players will have to deal with.

The Giant Insects are able to place Tunnel Openings across the board to threaten the defenders of civilization no matter where they attempt to hide.
Picture

The Giant Insects: Units

The Insects have the smallest roster of units available in the game, but they more than make up for it with their ability to punch through human defenses and soak up massive amounts of firepower.

Giant Workers are the basic unit that of an Insect army. Like all Insect units, they have a giant, double-digit health amount and throw a huge number of dice at the enemy. Making them even more resilient is their Burrowers ability, which makes them harder to hit when they are further away from enemy munitions.

The Giant Flyer is a specialized offshoot of the worker which trades some offensive strength for speed and flight, letting it control vital points on the battlefield while slower monsters creep forward behind it.

With its acid spit, the Giant Spitter is the only ranged capable arthropod in the Insect roster. Its terrible attack specializes in destroying unarmored infantry, melting them into a digestible goo!

The largest and most terrifying of the Insects is the Giant Soldier. With the highest health value in the game and an unbelievably bad attitude, they are the rarest sights on the battlefield. Its pincers can shred the strongest human armor like a can opener and a its behemoth size means it will never back away from a fight, even when it has been heavily damaged.

A Qualified Success Battle Report 5

My buddy Greg and I have started to play through A Qualified Success, a "Pint Sized Campaign" written for the WWII game Chain of Command. The campaign focuses on Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily, specifically the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry pushing north toward Syracuse while the Italian Coastal defenders and Napoli Infantry Regiment try to slow them down.
Picture
"The British have fallen back, we must continue to push! At all costs we must stall them just a little longer!" Tenente Bortolo Saracco's radio crackles. The Italian Napoli Regiment have gained momentum after their counterattack and pushed the British back to the village of Cassibile. If they can push the Kings Own Light Infantry back just a bit further, it will have secured invaluable time for the island of Sicily to be evacuated (and I would win the campaign!).
Picture
With great determination, a section of the Italians takes up a fire position at a bombed out farmhouse. They are supported by a Fiat light tank with dual machine guns.
Picture
An Italian scout team moves forward and finds themselves in the crosshairs of a strongly held British position. Before they know it, hand grenades and deadly machine gun fire are raining down on them. They soon flee with heavy casualties.
Picture
Meanwhile an Italian rifle team advances across open ground on the British left and meets only token resistance.
Picture
The British are now at an impasse. Flanked on their left they have no choice but to shift their momentum and adapt. A section bravely charges a larger Italian squad and due to the firepower from their Bren and Sten guns, as well as their pluck in the face of danger, the Italians are driven back. While the British have sustained significant losses, the Italians have completely exhausted their manpower attempting to break through the British lines. With extremely heavy casualties they find themselves falling back without having achieved their goal.

The heroic British squad that advanced across open ground under heavy fire and broke the Italian advance.

Counterattack!

July 14, 1943

After pushing through Cassibile, the British face resistance as they advance Northwest. The Italian coastal defense force has taken a beating in the previous engagement and the British hope to carry forward with momentum. British patrols encounter a small pocket of riflemen in the fields off the main road.
Picture
Two infantry squads and a mortar from the Kings Own take up positions behind a hedgerow and begin a prolonged firefight. Unfortunately for them, the Italians represent just a minor scouting party. And rather than the poorly equipped coastal defenders, the British face a counterattack from the Napoli Infantry Regiment!
Picture
The bulk of the Italian platoon present themselves in force on the British right and advance unopposed around the flank. It becomes clear that the Italians will soon have open firing lines to the bulk of the British forces. The British commander issues an order to fall back to a safer position at the edge of Cassibile and regroup.
Picture
Tenente Bartolo Saracco of the Napoli division knows that Sicily will be lost for a time. If he can hold up the allies just a little longer though, the Italians may have a chance to regroup and recover their lost territory...

July 13, 1943

Platoon Sergeant Roy Keane leads a squad on a reconnaissance-in-force, testing the outskirts of the village of Cassibile. Anticipating heavy resistance in the two story buildings, he swings to the left towards a hedgerow and crop fields. Suddenly a machine gun next opens up and additional Italian troops are seen moving through the field.
Picture
Keane and his men luckily make it across to the hedge where his men lay down accurate fire on the Italian infantry within the crops. The Bredas can't keep up with the Bren and the Italian riflemen have trouble getting a clear shot past their comrades.
Picture
At the same time a rumbling sound echoes from the road--a Sherman arrives and sends two shells directly into the machine gun nest. Men scream as shrapnel tears through them.
Picture
Keane and his squad continue to apply the pressure to the remaining Italian squad. Several men, including Caporale Cino Casaletto are instantly killed, and the remainder crack under the fire. Seeing their right flank collapse, any men who were holding onto the buildings in town retreat as well.

For his role leading the assault, Platoon Sergeant Keane has earned the respect of his men as well as mentions in the dispatches of his COs. The British continue their push towards Syracuse, but the now-organized Napoli Infantry Regiment might have something to say about that!

July 11, 1943

The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry have landed on the shores of Sicily meeting only token resistance from scattered and under-equipped coastal defense forces. They moved to take control of a railway station just outside the small village of Cassibile but soon came under fire from unexpectedly strong positions within the brick station itself as well as entrenchments and sandbag fortifications.
Picture
Under deadly fire from four Breda machine guns, two squads of the British platoon soon take casualties and become disordered. The British commander decides to pull back and wait for another chance. The green coastal defenders are ecstatic--if this is all the British can throw at them, perhaps Sicily is saved!
Picture
July 12, 1943

The next day is eerily quiet as the Yorkshire Brigade sends out a fresh platoon to attempt the capture of the rail station. A pair of mortars lay down a smokescreen but there's still no sign of the Italian defenders. Two British squads see the opportunity and begin an all-out sprint over the rails (this is where Greg got a quadruple phase while I had zero soldiers on the board!).
Picture
Finally, after two jump off points had been captured by the British, they heard a sound coming from the train station--the coastal defense platoon was singing songs and still celebrating their victory of the previous day. And the sentries seemed to have come in for limoncello too!

A few confused men staggered out of the station to trade shots with the British but the result was clear--after two attempts the Yorkshires had taken control of the train station. Next they'd be headed to the village of Cassibile.

July 10, 1943

1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment has been scattered across Southwest Sicily overnight in the opening hours of Operation Husky, the invasion of that island by the Allies. By morning, Lt. Harry Kane manages to gather disparate groups of paratroopers into something resembling a platoon and begins moving towards the bridge that was their original objective.

Meanwhile the 54th Napoli Infantry Regiment is responding to scattered and confusing reports of paratroopers all along the coast and further inland. A platoon under Tenente Bortolo Saracco moves to pursue reports of British soldiers West of Cassibile.

Kane’s paratroopers have not made it to their objective when they are forced to seek shelter in the Villa del Marchese, a stone mansion set among an olive orchard and farmland.
Picture
A squad from the 54th Napoli supported by a Fiat light tank moves through the waist high crops towards the villa when they are pinned down by accurate Bren fire from the windows. A rifle squad under Sergente Matarazzo, a 40 year old office clerk who suddenly finds bravery under this baptism of fire, attempts to flank the villa to the left. Meanwhile an Italian machine gun opens up from the Italian right flank, putting additional pressure on the paratroopers.
Picture
Sniper fire from the villa temporarily silences the machine gun and Lt Kane senses the opportunity to pressure the right flank of the Italians. A British squad moves out to toss some grenades at the machine gun crew but as they hop over a low stone wall a fresh section of Italians appear out of a ditch and the paras are caught in a withering fire in the open. Dragging their wounded sergeant they pull back behind the stone wall.
Picture
As Matarazzo’s rifle team moves within grenade range of the Villa's windows, Kane decides to abandon the villa and pull back into the nearby hills. Concern about being ambushed by additional paratroopers causes the Italians not to pursue. Now Kane will need to hold out and await relief from the 8th Army Forces fighting their way inland from the beaches...
